Excursions

Tour of the 1st deep geothermal heating plant of the state capital Potsdam (EWP)

(German Tour)

Monday, October 21, 2024, 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Location: Johann-Jacob-Baeyer-Str. / corner of Hanna-Arendt-Str. , 14473 Potsdam

As part of a resource and climate protection strategy, EWP, as part of the local municipal utility of the state capital of Potsdam, has set out to build a heating plant based on deep geothermal energy in the middle of the city of Potsdam. The aim is to supply green heat to a newly built district of the municipal housing association ProPotsdam and part of Potsdam's existing district heating network. The project started in 2020 with preliminary seismic explorations and is now in the construction and partial commissioning phase. A special feature is that the entire plant will be integrated into the city's immediate urban environment.

Get an idea of the status and surroundings of the project on site. Let our experts explain the details and challenges of the project to you. Visit the geothermal heating plant, which is still partly under construction, and take a look inside the borehole cellar with the wellheads of the hydrothermal doublet.

Cost: 30 €
Maximum number of participants: 60 people

Guided tour of the research laboratories and guided walk through the Albert Einstein Science Park (GFZ)

(German Tour)

Monday, October 21, 2024, 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Location: 12:45 p.m. entrance to the Albert Einstein Science Park, Telegrafenberg, 14473 Potsdam

It is possible to have lunch individually in the canteen beforehand. There will be a snack as part of the excursion.

Schedule:

13:00 - 15:00 | Lab tour

The GFZ Potsdam has a highly developed, interdisciplinary laboratory infrastructure in which scientific questions of basic and applied research in the field of geoenergy are dealt with.

The laboratories for geothermal rock and fluid physics enable the characterization and parameterization of physical rock and fluid properties, and a mechanical testing system (MTS) can analyse hydraulic and mechanical rock properties of geomaterials - all under simulated in-situ conditions of pressure and temperature at depths of up to 4 to 10 km. With the acquisition of the new TRUE-TRIAX high-pressure petrophysical testing facility, the GFZ has entered a new field of experimentation worldwide. It can be used to carry out highly specialized, experimental pressure tests on rock samples that open up previously unattainable experimental dimensions. Data on the thermal properties of rocks, minerals, geomaterials and cement are obtained in the Laboratory for Thermal Petrophysics. The Fluid Lab offers instruments for experiments and measuring equipment for the characterization, analysis and monitoring of processes in geothermal fluids. Another focus is the kinetics of the formation and decomposition of gas hydrates and their influence on the physical properties of sediments.

15:00 - 17:00 | Guided tour of the Albert Einstein Science Park

Cost: 30 €
Max. Number of participants: 20 persons

Tour of the GeoSpeicherBerlin real laboratory, Berlin Adlershof (BTB)

(German Tour)

Wednesday, October 23, 2024, 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

The excursion to the “GeoSpeicherBerlin” real-world laboratory for the energy transition in Berlin-Adlershof offers an insight into innovative technologies for seasonal heat storage and geothermal energy generation. The planned functionality of the energy storage system, its integration into the Berlin district heating network and the sustainable use of geothermal resources will be presented on site at BTB Berlin. Participants will gain practical impressions and be able to discuss the challenges and opportunities of aquifer storage as part of the heating transition in urban areas.

About the project: GeoSpeicher Berlin | BTB Berlin

Schedule:

8:30 am: Start at the Kongresshotel Potsdam

9:30-11:00 Presentation of the GeoSpeicherBerlin project and discussion at the BTB wood-fired power plant in Neukölln.

11:15-12:30 Visit to the GeoSpeicherBerlin drilling site and discussion with experts at the BTB combined heat and power plant in Adlershof

12:30 p.m.: Return journey
