Dr. Erwin Knapek
President of the Federal Association of Geothermal Energy
Dr. Erwin Knapek was born in 1942 in the Sudetenland and completed his school education after the expulsion in Oberchaching and Munich. After high school graduation and military service he studied physics at the Technical University of Munich. In 1970, he began his professional career as an employee at Siemens AG in the Central Technology, Research and Development Department.
In 1981 he received his doctorate on radiation damage in organic matter at very low temperatures, which he completed at the Technical University of Berlin. Since 1996 he has been the First Mayor of the municipality of Unterhaching. Unterhaching has 22 500 inhabitants and is located on the southern outskirts of Munich. The city is known for its energy supply by geothermal energy.
Dr. Erwin Knapek is married and has two daughters.
